Mobile Apps to Help Track Weight Loss

The most basic strategy in weight loss is to figure out your current weight, your goal weight, and try to get from the one to the other. There are many good mobile apps that can help you do that.

Ideal Weight (Free)

Ideal Weight is a simple app. Put in your weight and height and the app will calculate your BMI. It will also estimate an ideal weight based on your height. The interface is easy to use and convenient. The main problem is that it doesn’t really track your weight loss, per se, just calculates your current weight.

Calorie Counter MyFitnessPal (Free)

If you’re just looking to track your weight, this Calorie Counter app may be more than you need, but it’s a great app all around. A huge food database, the ability to track calories burned from over 350 different types of exercises, customized goals, and the ability to diet in parallel with friends make this a great choice in addition to the simple interface for tracking weight. Many people consider this the best of its kind.

Noom Weight Loss Coach (Free or Paid)

This is, again, more than just a simple tracking program, though it works for that purpose. Noom Weight Loss Coach is designed to do what it says, coach you to lose weight with a combination of simple tracking and inspirational messages, it is supposed to motivate you to lose weight when you might not otherwise be motivated enough to achieve your goals. It makes claims of effectiveness, such as “9 out of 10 active users lose weight” and “Our users lose an average of 10 lbs in 2 months.” In the first case, we don’t know how they define “active users,” and in the second case we’re not sure if they’re talking about active users. The pro version allows you to link up with other users and gives you more information.

Lose It! (Free or Paid)

Lose it! Allows you to track your caloric intake and exercise to help you achieve your weight loss goals. It provides a helpful and clear weight loss graph to show you how well you’re doing and how far you have to go to achieve your personal goals. Premium upgrade includes exercise and diet planning to help you achieve your goals.

There are good apps out there to help you keep track of your weight loss goals, but for many people there is no substitute to having the help of a live person to achieve your weight loss goals.
